Port Wakefiled, Kadino, Wallaroo, on the ferry, Luckly Bay, Port Lincoln
4995km - not counting the ferry crossing
Left
from Port Wakefield this morning for the short run through to Kadina
where we stopped at the supermarket to get some healthy food for
breakfast, then to McDonalds for coffee, no the real reason was to
post my blogs for the last two days as my pocket wifi was playing up,
think it must have been because we were in small towns so not getting
a good reception from the satellites. Then it was a few more km
through to Wallaroo where we were catching the ferry across to Lucky
Bay. Had a bit of time to fill in so went to the museum. This area
is called the copper triangle as copper was discovered in 1851 and
was mined through to 1923 when due to the low price they were forced
to close. The largest smelters outside of Wales were in this area.
Had
a two hour ferry ride across Spencer Gulf to Lucky Bay. Not sure why
it is called lucky bay, lucky to be there I would say, a few beach
batches along the beach and not much else. Totally different kind
of vegetation, low scrubby trees and small plants that almost look
like alpine plants but obviously coastal in nature, very sandy
ground. Then further along it is all large scale grain growing
farms, growing wheat, barley, canola. The old method was to burn the
stubble from the last harvest and then re-plant and some of the older
farmers are still using this method. Younger farmers are just
replanting amongst the stubble, and supposing using it as protection
for the new plants. There were also sheep grazing where the grain had
been harvested and they are having their lambs now. They are due to
sow there grain crops soon in time to catch a bit of rain. It was
raining all around us as we were heading to Port Lincoln, but not a
drop on us.
It
is very dry and barren looking, they get about 14 inches of rain a
year if they are lucky.
Got
into Port Lincoln half and hour before dark. We kind of felt we had
cheated a bit today by cutting across on the ferry, but it would have
been a long boring run up the A1 to Port Augusta and then back down
again.
