The Journey Begins

Well we left Mt Cotton in Queensland this morning in relatively fine warm weather.  It has been hot over the weekend and one of the best Easter Weekends for Australians so they say.  Stopped after the first 100km to fill up with  fuel and and have a coffee, think we were in NSW by then.  By the time we got to Byron Bay the wind was blowing a gale and the rain was coming down and was heaps cooler than it had been.  Had to stop and get some more gear on.  The road started to get a few bends and hills in  and the speed limit goes straight down to 60km.

Some parts of the motorway you can go 110km so long as there is a big divider between the lanes of opposite traffic. I started to get the speed wobbles at 110km, strong winds, heaps of trucks creating wind turbulence, seem to improve if I back the throttle off a bit the worked it up again.

Drove into Coffs harbour and had a look around the jetty, blowing a gale in there, round to the breakwater.  They had camels there if you wanted to ride them.

Growing pineapples, bananas and heaps sugar cane on way through.

Next place we called into was Nambucca Heads, beautiful little place where the river comes out to the sea.  Scott took up a conversation with a fisherman while I went to find us a drink.

Next destination was Kempsey.  thought we could make it before dark, we got in just on dark and found a motel in the centre of town.

Generally was don't seem to be able to cover the kilometres here like we can at home, reasons being have to keep to the speed limit as there a police or cameras everywhere.  Big signs warning of safety cameras, heavy fines and loss of licence, so many slow zones soon as there is a bit of bend or hill in the road the speed limit slows down, there is also allot of traffic and trucks on the road.  We did do 509km for the first day though.

Packed and ready to go
