Friday 13th

Headed down the Sydney Freeway from Gosford about 80km into the city. Apparently about 80,000 commuters travel this road every day going and coming from work. Its a four lane highway each way and its chokka with cars and trucks. Stopped off the freeway just before Sydney to get some breakfast and fuel before heading through the centre. A group of motorcyclists were meeting there for a weekend of camping and riding around Glouscestor. Were going to ride over the Harbour bridge but just missed that lane instead went in the tunnel that heads straight toward the airport and South. We have walked and driven over the bridge when we were in Sydney last year so the tunnel option was probably the easiest option of getting through. Some boy racer dude had a problem with letting me into his lane when I indicated, so he promptly changed into the left lane and roared through, echoing through the tunnel. Stopped at Rockdale foreshore and could get a view of the city and also the airport with all the planes landing and taking off.

Carried on down the Pacific Highway to Wollongong and had a look around Port Kembla. There were 10-12 ships waiting out at sea to come into port. This port exports coal from the mines in the Illawarra region. Went into Kiama and had lunch right beside the rail bridge where the coal trains were going through Port Kembla. All these places have the most amazing little beaches and bays. There are also inland lakes along here too. Then it was down the Princess Highway which is a beautiful road driving through dry stock farming, dairy farming, eucalyptus trees and finally away from the huge metropolis of Sydney and Brisbane. The only hiccup was congestion through Nowra. I was thinking that we hadn't seen any dead kangaroos on the side of the road, when I saw a wombat on the side, wouldn't want to hit one of those either, they would be like hitting a furry brick. Got into Bateman Bay just on dark so decided to stop the night. Tomorrow heading inland to Canberra to visit the National War Memorial Museum.
