Port Lincoln to Nullabor

21/4/12, Port Lincoln, Elliston, Streaky Bay, Ceduna, Nundoroo, Nullarbor
total 5705km - today 710km

OMG was my first reaction when I looked out of the curtains this morning, rain bucketing down, the farmers will be happy to get their grain crops growing. Put the rain and warm liners back into our jackets and set off. 144Km to the next town, misjudged the lack of warmth riding along in the rain. Got to Elliston dripping and cold, found a disabled toilet room that had plenty of space for us to get our wet gear off and put on some warm clothes. Then at a lovely cafe bacon eggs and coffee. Our next stop is Streaky Bay where we plan to fill up with petrol. About 10km out of our destination my bike run out of fuel, tipped it up and got a few more km then had to do the same again to get to the fuel station. Our estimated fuel consumption had dropped drastically, what with high winds and probably a bit more speed and also our panniers create allot of wind resistance.

As we headed west the rain eased off and finally stopped and out came the sun and got quite hot again. Went through Ceduna, stopped again at Nundroo topping up with petrol as we go. There was a pub at this roadhouse at Nundroo, and the road goes through the Yalata Aboriginal Land. It was interesting to note along this stretch of highway hundreds and hundreds of empty bottles thrown along the side of the road, maybe for 50km. Obviously Nundroo is a favorite place to go for the local indigenous community.

Got into Nullarboor about 4.30 having gone about 710km, bit short of the planned route for the day but it is 182km to the next stop, and we planned not to ride in the dark.

Camels have been added to the “what to watch out for on the roads”. We only saw dead wombats today.  Any road kill is quite often cleaned up during the day by the ravens and hawks and the only thing left on the road is the spread of blood.

Another interesting thing along the highway they have these painted grids and wider than usual road edges and this is for emergency landing for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Apparently at every road house they have an ambulance and also a runway behind the road house in case of emergencies or accidents on the highway.

Nullarbor Roadhouse Motel - $149
